Aging is a terrible thing, not only for the elderly, but their families. Dementia is very real and doesn't discriminate.
Do you have a relative:
• Who forgets things?
• Who remembers things from many years in the past yet has a hard time remembering what they did yesterday?
• Who blames others for loss of keys, wallet or money ?
• Who hides things around the house and then forgets where they hid them ?
• Who writes down names and numbers time and time again?
• Who quietly watches TV without knowing what’s on?
• Who, when you question them, won’t tell you what they are thinking?
• Who tells you they have so much on their mind?
• Who does something repeatedly – puts belt on and off or cleans their glasses many times each day?
• Who blames runny eyes or eyesight for not writing checks or doing laundry?
• Who is forgetting even easy every day things such as dialing a phone or using the television remote control?
• Who feels that their family members are harsh with them even if they are not?
• Who has experienced an attitude change – being hateful or cantankerous for no reason?
• Who has trouble counting money?
All the things above are traits of someone suffering from Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.
Don’t keep putting off medical treatment. There are medications that can help with memory loss. Check with your doctor today and make an appointment for your loved one.
There is also a great book, The 36-Hour Day that will help family members of Dementia patients. I am not the Author of the book nor have any connections with it except that it helped me understand how to deal with Dementia and my father who still suffers from Dementia.
Update: On October 8, 2009, my father passed away.
